Tax Advantages of a Home Business

Tax Advantages of a Home Business

By: Annette Phillips

Be sure you get what's coming to you! Be aware of all the tax advantages of having a business in your home. You can save money on your taxes by educating yourself about the deductions.

You may be surprised at the amount of daily items that can be deducted as a business expense once you have a business in your home. The usually business expenses are the obvious deductions but even some household expenses can be deductions. You should always check with your tax preparer to be certain of the laws in your state but in this article I have mentioned many of the deductions that are legal in most areas.

The most obvious deductions are business expenses. Anything related to your business, if you have a business portfolio, introductory product pack, or monthly product purchase these are all tax deductions. Only the purchases that are required in order to get paid qualify for deduction in most states. If you have an office area in your home you can deduct internet and phone if they are needed for your business, part of the expenses of your rent (mortgage is figured elsewhere), part of your power, water, sewer, garbage & etc. as business expenses. In most states you can also deduct your insurance as long as your office is in your home. Home repair bills and the cost of a cleaning service are also deductions.

Included with business expenses would be anything to do with advertising such as business cards, t-shirts, ads, fliers, literature and anything else you may use for advertising. Training items for you are also a deduction; books, CDs, seminars and reports etc. Be sure to save receipts to prove your expenses here! You can also deduct things that your kids might help with if you pay them by check and keep records, you can deduct landscaping, maintenance such as taking out the garbage, computer work, cleaning, stuffing envelopes and any other business related expenses. Remember to keep receipts for all office supplies such as paper, pens, printer ink, office furniture, cell phone (if you use it for business), postage, extra email accounts, web hosting, computer etc.

Any business related travel or any travel in which you conduct some business can be a deduction. Plan ahead to make all travel business related. Even if you stay with family you can give them a gift of products or even money and this can be a tax deduction as long as it does not exceed the going rate for hotels in the area. Business meals are good deductions, if you meet a prospective client for a meal or coffee, or if you meet with your business partners to discuss business. Mileage is another great deduction, the IRS has mileage rates that they allow, mileage to and from meetings and trainings, and for advertising, are deductible. You do need to keep a log to prove this, but it does not have to be fancy. Just a small note book that you can make a note in each time you drive is good enough and will save you quite a bit of money for a little effort.

If you are doing pretty well and are looking for other things to count as deductions on your taxes you may want to consider 401Ks, college tuition, car lease options,  charitable donations, and education savings accounts for children/grandchildren. There are many ways that you can save on taxes and you will want to use only the ones that are legal in your area and benefit you the most.

Maybe now you are thinking about the major things that you might consider as a deduction. Please do not use this as your sole guide. Your tax preparer and local laws should be the final deciding factor on deductions for your home business. Hopefully this has opened your eyes to the potential for deductions and you will be able to ask the right questions and provide the proper information to get the maximum deductions you deserve. If you plan ahead many of your everyday expenses can be a tax deduction when you have a business in your home. Record keeping is very important when you are documenting tax deductions. You don't want to be caught with no records!

Could You Be More Successful?

By: Annette Phillips

Have you ever wondered why others find success and it seems illusive to you? Have you wished that you had that magic formula to success that others seem to find so easily?

There are many factors that may keep you from changing yourself enough to find success. Yes, I did mention change because if what you are doing today is not working chances are you will have to change to find the success you seek. You can be as successful as anyone else, but first you need to identify what is holding you back so that you can change it and move forward to success.

Fear is probably the biggest factor holding people from success today. Most of us are not willing to take any risks to be successful. Now I am not saying you should stake your financial future and put a second mortgage on your home to be successful, but neither am I saying you shouldn't. If the goals and your commitment are big enough you have to do what it takes to get you there. Fear is usually a matter of not understanding something enough. Educate yourself on every aspect of what you want to do, understand what it takes to be successful in your field and then DO IT. Make sure that you understand it as well as you can, this will help alleviate fear. Lack of knowledge about your field can lead to failure. Focus on the things you can change, or influence and work in those areas. Fear of things you cannot change is simply a waste of your time. Take action and start to move forward. Advance on the fear daily and it will begin to retreat.

Pressure from family and friends is another thing that can really hold someone back. Family and friends are very well meaning and sometimes they can advise us and "save us from ourselves" so to speak, but most of the time when we share our ideas with family and friends they get scared for us because we are so excited and they advise us against the venture because they don't want to see us hurt. They are well meaning, but if you want to be successful you will have to be able to either keep your distance from the negative people or you will have to be able to look them in the face and thank them for sharing and they move ahead with your decision without letting their fears poison your excitement and drive. Do not allow others to make your decisions for you unless they are where you want to be. If you want to find success you will have to change what you are doing and go against what they are doing. Make a stand for yourself.

Since you have always done something a certain way and it worked reasonably well you are comfortable with it, but if it's not getting you the results you really want you may have to break the mold and do something a lot different to find success. Most people have habits that keep them from being successful. Be willing to break those habits and replace them with new more profitable ones. It takes 21-30 days to develop a new habit. Make a commitment to change just one thing a month and you will see improvements immediately. If you want different results you are going to have to take different actions.

How much do you really want to be successful? Do you really care? Lack of true commitment is a real killer for success. You may think it sounds great to make lots of money every month, but doing what it takes to get there is another thing altogether. Do you really care enough to make a commitment, take action and get things moving? This is crucial to your success. You need to really take a look at your current situation and decide if you have what it takes to be successful or if you just have what it takes to dream about being successful. There is a big difference between those two.

Do you see yourself as successful? If you see yourself negatively you will have a tough time overcoming that and being successful. Make a list of what you want to be and then turn those things into positive statements about yourself. Your list may look like this:
I am motivated.
I am organized.
I am decisive.
I am successful.
I am educated.
I am happy.
You get the idea from that list that it can include anything you wish to be. Start going over that list and change the habits that will make those statements true and say those true statements to yourself. This will change your mindset and your success will increase as you begin to see yourself as successful. When you start seeing yourself as successful others will see that too.

Be willing to change yourself and do whatever it takes to be successful. Know that being successful takes action, not just wishful thinking. Expect opposition and handle it so that you can keep moving forward and create a successful future for you and your family. When you are willing to make changes in your life to move toward success you cannot help but find it. Take the first step today!

Goals For Life!

By: Annette Phillips

Achieving goals is easy if you know how to set them and make the commitment to achieve them. Goal setting and commitment is your road map to success.

Achieving goals takes a sincere desire and commitment. Commitment is the most important ingredient short of setting the goals themselves. Without a written set of goals it is easy just to float along wherever life may lead. When goals are written down it makes them more real and they are taken more seriously. Commit to do what it takes to make each goal a reality. This should not be like the New Year's goals everyone sets and then forgets. These should be written out and reviewed regularly to be sure you are on track for success.

Goals should be very specific, realistic and measurable. A specific, realistic and measurable goal would be: Loose 15 lbs by June 2008. It is specific as to what needs to be done, it is realistic because the weight that needs to be lost can be broken down to a realistic amount each week, and it is measurable because there is a specific date that it will be completed. Never be afraid to challenge yourself with your goals. The sky is the limit; so set those goals and go for it. Goals should be based on your values. Your values are who you are and your goals should match those values.

Short term and long term goals are important to keep you focused on the big picture. Each action in the day should lead closer to the goals that are set. Break down goals into actions for each day, each week and each month so that you know what needs to be done to reach a goal. It is not good enough to say that you want to have a Masters Degree in Psychology by June of 2010. That goal will need to be broken down into steps that include getting information on Colleges and Universities, checking into financial aid and deciding whether you will attend in person or do the classes online etc. All of the steps can be broken down to make this an attainable goal.

Every goal should be regularly re-evaluated and updated. Don't be so set in your ways that you continue to push toward a goal that no longer benefits you. Goals can change as your life changes, just be sure you are changing them for the right reasons and not because you are just too lazy to do what it takes to get there. Anyone can do anything if they want it badly enough. Without goals and the commitment to achieve those goals your life will be off track. This is your road map for life. It is true you may eventually get where you are going but without a clear picture of where and when, it may take years longer than it would have with a clear written set of goals.

Value yourself enough to be successful and have the courage to plan for that success each day. There will always be excuses you can use. Maybe you don't have enough time, enough money or enough education. The bottom line is that all those excuses are just that – excuses! There is always a way to solve any issue or even turn it into an advantage if you want it bad enough. Taking the time today to set your goals and make a commitment to them will make a difference in your life for years to come! Take that step and make your dreams into reality today.

Catch the Energy!

By: Annette Phillips

How do you catch the energy in your life and business and channel it into the right avenues for success? How do you improve your results on a daily basis?

Catching the energy is easier than it might seem as first. So often energy is wasted on the wrong activity but you can catch your energy and put it to use in the right area and reap results for your business. Probably the biggest key to capturing the energy is to find something you love. You will have more energy to pour into any project if it's something you truly love doing. If you truly cannot do something you love there is hope for you too because you can choose the way you approach anything, but doing what you love is the ultimate key for energy. We always have more energy for the things we love. Think about your energy level when you are skiing or participating in your favorite activity versus your energy level when you are doing dishes or cleaning the toilet. You can see what I mean; we have a lot more energy reserved for those things that we love! So if you have a choice do what you love.

What if you can't do what you love? You also can capture energy because you can choose to improve your attitude. Having a great attitude improves the energy level that you work at by leaps and bounds. Choose your attitude every day. Choose to approach your day with energy and positivity. Technically positivity is not a word but it should be. It is the action of being positive as we work through our day. If you look at your every day life, cleaning the toilet or weeding the front flower bed may not be your favorite job in the world but it is something that has to be done so why not approach it with a positive attitude and reap the benefits of being happy as you work. You can choose your path every day when you get up! Choose to be successful by choosing positivity. It takes courage and confidence to approach everything with a positive attitude. You will notice a difference in your day as soon as you make this change. There will be more energy and momentum in your day. You have more control of your day because you control your attitude in every aspect of your day. This gives you more power and more energy.

The next thing you can do to catch the energy is to be the best part of someone's day. If you can be the one thing in someone's day that makes the difference in their day being average or being a great day wouldn't you want to do that? Be memorable! Be the one thing that person remembers today. This creates more positive energy for you to draw from as you do more for others. You can make a difference for those around you. If you are the one people look to for guidance or for that "pick-me-up" during the day you will create more energy for yourself and for them. This source of energy is endless when you capture the possibilities.

Look into your life and your business and find ways that you can create more energy simply by doing what you love and creating positive ways to interact with others that puts you into the power seat! You will find more energy than you ever knew existed if you put these practices into play today.

Change That Works!

By: Annette Phillips

Change seems to be that ever feared thing in life and in business. It seems like we just get the hang of something and it changes. Those who accept change quickly and even learn to see it coming in advance and be set up to flow with it will be the ones who have the greatest success.

Change is unavoidable. It is something that will happen every day of our lives and there is nothing we can do about it. There will always be those who will see change as a bad thing and stick with the old methods just because they worked. The old "if its not broken don't fix it" mentality does not work when it comes to business. The main reason people resist change is because it causes fear. The results of this change are unknown. If you are one of those people who resist change you will need to learn that change is constant and you will have to learn not to resist it if you want to be successful.

For those who can accept and even anticipate change success is easier to achieve. Be the one who looks for new and better ways to do things. Be the one to introduce the change sometimes. Change should always be viewed as a positive thing. Ask yourself, "How can this benefit me?" "How can this benefit my income?" Use the change to improve yourself and your business. Change is an opportunity to grow. Growth should occur daily as we continually learn.

Education is the best way to see change coming and be ready to be on the cutting edge. You should be learning and growing every day. If you don't have a book you are currently reading and a list of books you want to read along with an audio course or something similar that you are working on, you are not learning and growing. You are cheating yourself and your business. To be successful you should be learning something every day. You should be searching constantly for the next book or audio that will put you in line to be one of the first to support a new idea, product or concept. In the world of computers it seems that changes occur almost every minute so keeping yourself up to date on the new technology is beneficial to your growth as well.

Even when a change does not work out the way it was meant to, you can gain benefit from it by learning from the situation. Embrace change and see it as a positive motivator you will reap great benefits in your business and in life.
